"The art of taxation consists of plucking the goose so as to obtain the most feathers with the least hissing.”
Jean-Baptiste Colbert 1665
Louis XIV’S finance minister
History and Future
My training started at a three partner firm in Camberley, Surrey, where I learnt the art of number crunching. Luxury then was a calculator as computers were still in their infancy.
Then I moved to a larger firm in Godalming, Surrey where I progressed to Audit Manager, responsible for overseeing audit staff on large companies. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant at that firm, I found my natural fit was in the taxation of individuals and businesses, whether being start-ups, established and high net worth clients.
In the late 1980’s I became assistant to the Senior Tax Partner at a 27 partner practice in London. However, having an entrepreneurial itch to scratch, in January 1990, I founded my own business with the sole aim of providing a personal approach to clients and support their business needs.
Today, a new breed of accountant is emerging. The new breed needs to be accessible outside normal hours, to get to the heart of a business or personal tax issues, to be able to discuss and drive ideas, having comfort in the numbers supporting the decisions and to revise financial forecasts. As well as to identify Key Performance Indicators from the noise of number overload, to speak to client’s bank managers, mortgage lenders, tenancy agents etc.
Technological innovation, more accessible opportunities, smart phones, tablets and the availability of ’24-7’ working, has now paved the way for a new breed of accountant – more accessible, faster in response and to bounce ideas around. Hence, clients know that I am accessible outside 9 to 5, and beyond Monday to Friday for anything urgent or a pressing worry.
